Troop I - NEWS RELEASE
For Immediate Release

August 12, 2011
Operation Trailer Hitch

Troop I- During the past week Louisiana State Police Troop I conducted an operation that targeted unsafe, unregistered, and stolen trailers. “Operation Trailer Hitch,” as it was called, took place from Tuesday August 9, 2011 through today, August 12, 2011.

During the last few months, troopers reported an increased number of trailers with no lighting, improper equipment, no registration, and unsafe conditions. Troop I also received reports from the Bureau of Investigations about an increased number in stolen trailers in the area. In an effort to make sure the motoring public was safe, and in an attempt to recover stolen property, troopers from Troop I, Transportation Environmental Safety Services (TESS), and the Insurance Fraud Unit looked for trailers with various violations.

The operation began at 5:00 a.m., on August 9, 2011, and concluded this afternoon. In all troopers issued 439 citations and recovered one stolen trailer. Over 200 of the citations issued were violation citations. A violation citation is a citation that does not have a fine associated with it but, requires the operator to fix the problems with the trailer and report back to State Police or the Office of Motor Vehicles to show compliance with the problems found with it.

Throughout the operation troopers issued the following citations:

Violation citations: 219
Registration violations: 45
Equipment violations: 40
TESS violations: 100
Other violations: 18
Motor Vehicle Inspection Violations: 17
Trailers towed: 20
Stolen trailers: 1

While this operation has concluded, troopers and other law enforcement agencies will continue to look for unsafe, and unregistered trailers being operated on public roadways within our state. The purpose of “Operation Trailer Hitch” was to ensure public safety, raise public awareness, and recover stolen property.

State Police reminds the public that a trailer is considered a vehicle and is required to have a motor vehicle inspection sticker with it at all times. Anyone needing information about registering a trailer, having a trailer stamped or needing a physical inspection for a trailer or vehicle can call Troop I at 337-262-5880.
