| Troop I - NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release September 14, 2011 Troopers Investigate Fatal Crash in St. Landry Parish St. Landry Parish- Last night, Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a two vehicle crash on LA 741 near Cheramie Road. The crash claimed the life of a 49 year old Arnaudville man. According to investigating troopers, on September 13, 2011, shortly after 8:00 p.m., 49-year-old Bernell Bernard of Arnaudville, LA, was driving a 2001 Kawasaki Bayou 4-wheeler on the east side of LA 741. Bernard drove the 4-wheeler onto LA 741 at which point the 4-wheeler overturned. Bernard was trapped under the vehicle in the southbound lane. A 2000 GMC van driven by 66-year-old Hammie Janise of Port Barre, LA, was traveling south on LA 741. Janise attempted to avoid hitting the 4-wheeler but was unsuccessful. Her vehicle struck Bernard and the 4-wheeler before coming to rest. Janise sustained minor injuries in the crash and was treated at the scene. Bernard, who was not wearing a helmet, died at the scene as a result of his injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Routine toxicology samples were obtained and have been submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. This is the 48th fatal crash and 50th fatality Troop I has investigated this year. For More Information Contact: | |||
