Edmonson, Superintendent News Release – Troop I September 28, 2010 Operation Lifesaver Enforcement Detail in St. Landry Parish Today, Louisiana State Police Troop I, the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office, and the Union Pacific Railroad Police conducted a railroad grade crossing enforcement detail in Eunice and Opelousas. This is the third such detail conducted in the last two weeks in Southwest Louisiana. Troopers, deputies, and officers were looking for drivers who ignored railroad crossing warning signals as a train approached. During today’s detail, a total of 20 citations were issued including 18 for failure to obey a signal indicating the approach of a train, 1 for driving under suspension, and 1 child restraint violation. In the last month, 4 railroad grade crossing collisions have occurred in Louisiana resulting in 2 deaths and 17 injuries. These collisions occurred in Acadia, Allen, Bienville, and St. Landry Parishes. Louisiana state law requires motorists to obey signals at railroad crossings that indicate an approaching train including flashing red lights and lowered gates. Failure to obey these signals may result in a fine of up to $200.00 and up to 30 days in jail for a first offense with higher fines and increased jail time for additional violations.
