Edmonson, Superintendent Troop I Press Release October 11, 2010 Crash Claims One Life Iberia Parish- Last night, Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a two vehicle crash on LA 679 at LA 345. The crash claimed the life of a New Iberia woman. According to investigating troopers, on October 11, 2010, shortly after 8:00 p.m., a 1999 Ford truck driven by 36-year-old Delmus Bonin of St. Martinville, LA, was traveling north on LA 679. A 1998 Chevrolet truck driven by 17-year-old Jade Romero of New Iberia, LA, was traveling behind Bonin. Romero entered the southbound lane in an attempt to pass Bonin. Romero traveled back into the north lane before completing his pass. The right rear side of Romero’s vehicle struck the front left side of Bonin’s vehicle. Bonin’s vehicle left the roadway to the right, overturned, struck a tree and a utility pole. After impact, Romero’s vehicle left the roadway to the left coming to rest in a ditch. Romero was not injured in the crash. A passenger in his vehicle sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Bonin sustained moderate injuries in the crash and was transported to a local hospital. A passenger in Bonin’s vehicle, 40-year-old Shannon Bonin of New Iberia, LA, died as a result of her injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene by the Iberia Parish Coroner. Routine toxicology samples were obtained from both drivers. The results are pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab.
