Two Vehicle Crash Leaves One Dead

St. Landry Parish- Last night, Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a two vehicle fatal crash on LA 104 west of LA 3043 that claimed the life of an Opelousas man.

According to investigating troopers on January 31, 2011, shortly after 7:00 p.m., 40-year-old Casey Olivier of Opelousas, LA, was traveling east on LA 104 in a 2000 Cadillac SUV. According to witnesses, Olivier was approaching a 1999 Nissan passenger car, driven by 19-Year-old Kiera Laws of Opelousas, LA, from behind at a high rate of speed. Olivier’s vehicle struck the rear of Laws’ vehicle. After impact, Olivier’s vehicle ran off the north side of the roadway and struck the ditch embankment. Laws’ vehicle ran off the south side of the road and came to rest in the ditch.

Olivier was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Landry Parish Coroner. A passenger in Olivier’s vehicle, 19-year-old Anthony Smith of Opelousas, LA, was wearing a seatbelt and sustained minor injuries. Laws and her two passengers, 23-year-old Taurean Montero of Opelousas, LA, and 22-year-old Nadiana Roberts of Opelousas, LA, were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Toxicology samples were taken from both drivers the results are pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. This crash remains under investigation.

“We cannot stress enough the importance of wearing a seatbelt every time you are riding in a car,” said Captain Troy Meche, Commander of Troop I. “Wearing a seatbelt allows you to remain in your seat during a crash. It will also help to reduce your chances of being injured in a crash.”

This is the 8th fatal crash and 8th fatality Troop I has investigated this year.
