Edmonson, Superintendent Troop I Press Release January 19, 2011 ***UPDATE*** Driver Identified in Fatal Crash Louisiana State Police Troop I has identified the driver of the 2000 Dodge Neon involved in a two vehicle fatal crash that occurred on January 16, 2011. The Neon was driven by 53-year-old Leonardo Lopez of New Iberia, LA. After the crash occurred, Lopez was pronounced dead at a local hospital. This crash remains under investigation. January 17, 2011 Unrestrained Driver Dies in Two Vehicle Crash Iberia Parish- Last night, Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a two vehicle crash on US 90 at Neko Town Road. The crash claimed the life of a New Iberia man. According to investigating troopers, on January 16, 2011, at 10:22 p.m., a 2000 Dodge Neon was stopped on Neko Town Road at US 90. A 2010 Jeep driven by 20-year-old Mallorie Cormier of Youngsville, LA, was traveling west on US 90 approaching Neko Town Road. For unknown reasons, the driver of the Neon pulled onto US 90 within hazardous proximity to Cormier’s vehicle. Cormier’s vehicle struck the Neon in the intersection. The driver of the Neon was not wearing a seatbelt and was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead. Cormier was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. The name of the driver of the Neon is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin. Toxicology samples were obtained from both drivers and the results are pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. This crash remains under investigation. This is the second fatal crash Troop I investigated in 24 hours where an unrestrained vehicle occupant died in a crash. Louisiana State Law requires that everyone in a motor vehicle wear a seatbelt. While wearing a seatbelt will not save you in every crash, it will reduce your risk of injury in most crashes. Remember to always buckle up and designate a driver. For More Information Contact: | |||
