TROOP I NEWS RELEASE

November 23, 2013
Troopers Investigating Single Vehicle Fatal Crash in Iberia Parish

Iberia Parish- Last night, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a single vehicle crash on US Highway 90 Service Road near Darnell Road which claimed the life of a New Iberia man.

According to investigating Troopers just after 9:00 p.m. last night 28-year-old James Gonsoulin of New Iberia, was driving a 2005 Ford passenger car east on the north US Highway 90 Service Road. As Gonsoulin approached Darnell Road he traveled off the right side of the road in a curve, entered the median causing his vehicle to overturn several times. Gonsoulin was not restrained and was ejected. He was transported to a local hospital where he pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

It is unknown if impairment was a factor in this crash; however, routine toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

A lack of seat belt use continues to be a factor in fatal crashes across the Troop I area. Troopers will continue to work day and night to locate drivers and passengers who are not restrained. Louisiana Law requires that all persons riding in a car or truck be properly restrained regardless of seating position. While wearing a seat belt will not save you in every crash it will reduce your risk of injury in most crashes.
