March 24, 2013 Pedestrian Dies in Crash on I-49 Service Road SUNSET- This morning, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a fatal crash involving a pedestrian on I-49 service road at Roxanne Road north of Sunset. According to investigating Troopers, at 6:12 a.m., 59-year-old Guilliam Leger of Opelousas, was driving a 1990 Dodge passenger car south on I-49 service road approaching Roxanne Road. A pedestrian wearing dark clothing was walking south in the lane of travel. For reasons still under investigation, the pedestrian was struck from behind by Leger’s vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Landry Parish Coroner. Leger, who was restrained, was not injured in the crash. It is unknown if the pedestrian was impaired; however, toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted for analysis. The name of the pedestrian will be released once next-of-kin can be notified. This crash remains under investigation. Troopers remind pedestrians that State Law requires them to walk on a sidewalk when one is provided. If no sidewalk is provided, pedestrians must walk against the flow of traffic on the farthest left side of the road. It is recommended pedestrians wear light or reflective clothing when walking along roadways. For More Information Contact: TFC.
