TROOP I NEWS RELEASE

April 5, 2013
Driver Arrested for Vehicular Homicide after Passenger Dies in Crash

LAFAYETTE PARISH- Last night, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a fatal crash on LA Hwy 724 at Congress which claimed the life of a 21-year-old Duson man.

According to investigating Troopers, at 10:50 p.m., 29-year-old Gerard Richard of Duson, was driving a 2004 GMC Envoy east on West Congress Street. A 1995 Ford truck, driven by 60-year-old Glynn Hartwell Duson, was traveling north on LA Highway 724 approaching Congress Street. Richard failed to stop his vehicle at a two-way stop sign, as his vehicle entered the intersection it struck Hartwell’s vehicle.

Hartwell, who was properly wearing a seat belt, was not injured. Richard was not wearing a seat belt and sustained moderate injuries. He was transported to an area hospital for treatment. The two passengers in Richard’s vehicle, 21-year-old Harold Arnold of Duson and 32-year-old Leroy Richard of Duson, were also unrestrained. Leroy Richard sustained minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital. Arnold was taken to an area hospital where, he later died as a result of his injuries.

Troopers found that Gerard Richard was impaired by alcohol. He was placed under arrest for failure to stop at a stop sign, vehicular homicide, vehicular negligent injury, open alcohol container and suspended driver’s license. He was booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center.

This crash remains under investigation.

Impairment and a lack of seat belt use continue to be the leading factors in fatal crashes in the Troop I area. So far this year, Troop I has investigated 19 fatal crashes resulting in 23 fatalities. Troopers remind occupants that while wearing a seat belt will not save you in every crash; however, research shows that it can greatly reduce your risk of injury in a crash.
