TROOP I NEWS RELEASE April 30, 2013 Speed a Factor in Fatal Crash ST LANDRY PARISH- This morning, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a fatal crash on LA Highway 356 east of LA 343 which claimed the life of a Sunset female. Last night, 38-year-old Chastity Nichol of Sunset, was driving a 2005 GMC Yukon east on LA Highway 356. As Nichol approached a left curve she traveled off the right side of the road, crossed a private driveway and struck a tree. Nichol, who was restrained, was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Landry Parish Coroner. Troopers suspect speed was a factor in the crash; they are also working to determine what time the vehicle crashed last night. It is unknown if Nichol was impaired when the crash occurred; however, routine toxicology samples were obtained and have been submitted to the State Police Crime Lab for analysis. This crash remains under investigation. Impairment and a lack of seat belt use continue to be the leading factors in fatal crashes in the Troop I area. So far this year, Troop I has investigated 23 fatal crashes resulting in 27 fatalities. Troopers remind occupants that while wearing a seat belt will not save you in every crash; however, research shows that it can greatly reduce your risk of injury in a crash.
