Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP A- NEWS RELEASE 18-yr Old Dies After Motorcycle Crash BATON ROUGE- On Monday, February 2, 2009 at approximately 11:55 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop A responded to a fatal two-vehicle crash on LA Hwy 42 (Highland Rd) between Airline Hwy and Interstate 10 involving a motorcycle. Christopher B. Roussel (W/M, age 18 of Baton Rouge) was traveling westbound on LA Hwy 42 on his 2006 Honda Rebel motorcycle when he approached a vehicle ahead of him that had stopped to make a left turn onto E. Petroleum Dr. Witnesses to the crash said Roussel was traveling at a high rate of speed as he approached the stopped vehicle. Roussel attempted to brake the motorcycle abruptly, causing him to lose control. He was thrown from the motorcycle and into the eastbound travel lane. A 1998 Ford Ranger, driven by Richard M. Sparks (W/M, age 30 of Torbert, LA) was traveling eastbound on LA Hwy 42 at the moment Roussel was thrown from his motorcycle. Sparks was unable to avoid a collision and struck Roussel and his motorcycle in the eastbound lane. Roussel was pronounced dead at the scene by the East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office as a result of injuries he sustained during the crash. Drug use by Roussel is suspected pending results of toxicology testing from the State Police Crime Lab. He was wearing a helmet. Sparks consented to a breath alcohol test in which he tested negative for alcohol use. Contact: Sgt. Markus L.
