TROOP I NEWS RELEASE

May 27, 2013
Unrestrained Driver Dies in Interstate Crash

ST. LANDRY PARISH- Yesterday, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a single vehicle crash on Interstate 49 north of Washington which claimed the life of a Carencro man.

According to investigating Troopers, on May 26, 2013, shortly before 5:40 p.m., 69-year-old Robert Ortego of Carencro, was driving a 2012 Dodge Ram south on I-49. For reasons still under investigation, Ortego traveled off the left side of the road, crossed the northbound lanes and struck a tree on the east side of the Interstate. Ortego was not restrained and was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Landry Parish Coroner.

Routine toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

A lack of seat belt use continues to be a factor in fatal crashes across the Troop I area. Troopers will continue to work day and night to locate drivers and passengers who are not restrained. Louisiana Law requires that all persons riding in a motor vehicle be properly restrained regardless of seating position. While wearing a seat belt will not save you in every crash it will reduce your risk of injury in most crashes.
