TROOP I NEWS RELEASE October 11, 2013 Unrestrained New Iberia Man Dies in Crash St. Mary Parish- Today, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a single vehicle crash on LA Highway 87 near LA Highway 670 which claimed the life of a New Iberia man. According to investigating Troopers, a farmer contacted 911 after locating a vehicle in the coulee just after 7:30 a.m. this morning. Troopers determined that between 1:00 a.m. and 2:00 a.m., 60-year-old Charles Rogers of New Iberia, was driving a 1998 Nissan Maxima south on LA Highway 87. For reasons still under investigation, Rogers traveled off the right side of the road in a curve, entered a water filled coulee then his vehicle overturned. Rogers was not restrained and was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Mary Parish Coroner. Routine toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. This crash remains under investigation. A lack of seat belt use continues to be a factor in fatal crashes across the Troop I area. Troopers will continue to work day and night to locate drivers and passengers who are not restrained. Louisiana Law requires that all persons riding in a motor vehicle be properly restrained regardless of seating position. While wearing a seat belt will not save you in every crash it will reduce your risk of injury in most crashes. For More Information Contact: TFC.
