TROOP I NEWS RELEASE

July 21, 2013
Pedestrian Killed in Late Night Crash

ST. LANDRY PARISH- Last night, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a fatal crash on LA Highway 358 near Breaux Road which claimed the life of a pedestrian.

According to investigating Troopers, on July 20, 2013, shortly before midnight a pedestrian wearing dark clothing was walking east on LA Highway 358 in the eastbound lane. A 2002 Ford truck, driven by 34-year-old Kay Gaspard of Opelousas, was traveling east on LA Highway 358. For reasons still under investigation, Gaspard struck the pedestrian from behind. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Landry Parish Coroner. Gaspard, who was restrained, was not injured.

The name of the pedestrian is being withheld until the next-of-kin can be notified.

It is unknown if impairment was a factor in the crash; however, routine toxicology samples have been obtained and will be submitted to the State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

This crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana State Law requires that all pedestrians walk on sidewalks when provided. If no sidewalk is provided the law requires pedestrians walk as far to the left side of the road as possible against the flow of traffic. Troopers also remind pedestrians that wearing light colored or reflective clothing will increase your chances of being seen by motorists.

While the results in this crash are still pending, Troopers remind pedestrians and drivers that impairment continues to be a leading factor in fatal crashes across Acadiana. A person’s ability to make good decisions is diminished as alcohol is absorbed in the body. Troopers will continue their education programs and enforcement campaigns to reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads.
