TROOP I NEWS RELEASE

June 18, 2013
11-Year-Old Succumbs to Injuries Sustained in Saturday Crash

ST. LANDRY PARISH- Yesterday, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop I learned that an 11-year-old girl from Leonville died from injuries she sustained in a Saturday crash.

According to investigating Troopers, on June 15, 2013, at 8:22 p.m., a 16-year-old male was driving a 2004 GMC Sierra west on US Highway 190 west of Port Barre. A 1998 Mercury Sable, driven by 44-year-old Debra Trahan of Leonville, was traveling in front of the 16-year-old. Trahan had slowed down in preparation of making a left turn. As she was slowing, her vehicle was struck from behind by the 16-year-old.

Trahan was restrained and sustained no injuries. An 11-year-old passenger in her vehicle, Anna Trahan of Leonville, was also restrained and was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. A third juvenile occupant in Trahan’s vehicle was also restrained and was taken to a local hospital with severe injuries. The 16-year-old was restrained and not injured in the crash.

Late yesterday afternoon, Troopers were notified that Anna Trahan had succumbed to her injuries.

Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in this crash. This crash remains under investigation.

While the cause of the crash remains under investigation, troopers urge the public to remain vigilant while driving and avoid distracting activities, especially the temptations of electronic devices that can substantially divert a driver’s attention away from the road. Motor vehicle crashes are unexpected events. By taking precautionary steps including never driving while distracted or impaired, motorists can substantially reduce their risk of being involved and/or injured in a crash.
