TROOP I NEWS RELEASE

July 20, 2013
Driver Arrested for Negligent Homicide Following Crash

ST. LANDRY PARISH- An 18-year-old Port Barre woman is dead, and an Opelousas man has been arrested following a late night fatal crash on LA Highway 103 near Alex Stoute Road.

According to investigating Troopers, on July 19, 2013, at 11:27 p.m., 37-year-old Kevin Mayo of Opelousas, was driving a 1994 Buick south on LA Highway 103. For reasons still under investigation, Mayo traveled off the right side of the road, entered a ditch and struck a concrete culvert. Neither Mayo nor his 18-year-old passenger, Corita Leben of Port Barre, was restrained. Leben was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Landry Parish Coroner. Mayo sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital.

Troopers have obtained toxicology samples and they will be submitted to the State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

After being release from the hospital, Mayo was booked into the St. Landry Parish Jail for negligent homicide, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, no seat belt and driving with an invalid driver’s license.

This crash remains under investigation.

Troopers remind drivers and passengers that Louisiana Law requires that all persons, regardless of seating position, must be restrained. While wearing a seat belt will not save you in every crash it will greatly reduce your risk of injury in most crashes.
