TROOP I PRESS RELEASE

July 15, 2013
Unrestrained Driver Dies in Crash

ST. LANDRY PARISH- Today, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a single vehicle fatal crash on LA Highway 357 near Austin Road.

According to investigating Troopers at 6:02 a.m., a Texas man was driving a 1998 Isuzu truck south on LA Highway 357 approaching a left curve. For reasons still under investigation, the driver traveled off the right side of the road, entered a ditch causing his vehicle to overturn several times. The driver, who was unrestrained, was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Landry Parish Coroner. The drivers name is being withheld pending next of kin notification.

It is unknown if impairment was a factor in the crash however; routine toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted to the State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

This crash remains under investigation.

Impairment and a lack of seat belt use continue to be the leading factors in fatal crashes in the Troop I area. So far this year, Troop I has investigated 37 fatal crashes resulting in 42 fatalities. Troopers remind drivers that Louisiana Law requires all occupants of motor vehicles to be properly restrained. While wearing a seatbelt will not save you in every crash, it will greatly reduce the risk of injuries in most crashes.
