| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP I NEWS RELEASE January 7, 2013 Unrestrained Jeanerette Man Dies in Crash IBERIA PARISH- This afternoon, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a two vehicle fatal crash on LA Highway 85 near College Road which claimed the life of a Jeanerette man. According to investigating Troopers, at 2:55 p.m., a 1998 Honda Civic driven by 33-year-old Wilbur Alexander of Jeanerette, was traveling north on LA Highway 85. Alexander was attempting to pass a passenger car and a 1991 Case Tractor pulling a loaded sugarcane cart driven by 52-year-old Gerald Spencer of New Iberia. While passing the northbound vehicles, a southbound vehicle was approaching Alexander and he steered back into the northbound lane. Alexander’s vehicle rotated and struck the rear of Spencer’s sugarcane cart. Alexander, who was not restrained, was transported to a local hospital with life threatening injuries. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, Alexander died as a result of his injuries. Spencer was not injured in the crash. It is unknown if alcohol was a factor in this crash; however, toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. This crash remains under investigation. As sugarcane harvesting seasons continues, Troopers urge drivers to use caution when passing slow moving vehicles. Drivers should only pass when it is safe to do so in a passing zone and when approaching traffic, and/or intersections, is at a distance greater than 100 feet. Troopers also remind drivers that Louisiana Law requires all occupants of motor vehicles to be properly restrained. While wearing a seatbelt will not save you in every crash, it will greatly reduce the risk of injuries in most crashes. For More Information Contact: | |||
