Fatal Crash Claims Life of Lafayette Man

LAFAYETTE- This morning, troopers assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a three vehicle fatal crash on US Highway 90 at Verot School Road which claimed the life of a Lafayette man.

According to investigating troopers, on August 5, 2012, at 2:15 a.m., 24-year-old Bret Legnon of Lafayette, was driving a 2006 Honda passenger car west on US Highway 90 at a high-rate of speed. For reasons still under investigation, Legnon traveled through the center median and into the eastbound lanes. Legnon’s vehicle struck two eastbound vehicles head-on. The first vehicle was a 2003 GMC Yukon driven by 36-year-old Brian Jackson of New Iberia. The second vehicle Legnon struck was a 2011 Honda passenger car driven by Canh Nguyen of Abbeville.

Legnon was pronounced dead by the Lafayette Parish Coroner. Troopers are still working to determine if Legnon was restrained when the crash occurred. Jackson and Nguyen sustained minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital.

It is unknown if impairment was a factor in this crash; however, routine toxicology samples have been obtained and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

This crash remains under investigation.

While it is unknown if impairment was a factor in this crash, troopers remind drivers that impaired driving continues to be a major problem throughout Louisiana. Troopers have seen the number of deaths and serious injuries due to impaired drivers decrease in recent years, there is still work to be done. Troopers will continue to enforce Louisiana’s DWI laws across the state and remain committed to a public education campaign to end impaired driving. Have a plan and designate a driver before you decide to drink.
