Troop I - NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release December 17, 2011 Pedestrian Dies in Fatal Crash Port Barre- Early this morning, Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a fatal crash on US 190 east of Port Barre. The crash claimed the life of a man from Mississippi. According to investigating troopers, on December 17, 2011, shortly after 1:40 a.m., 30-year-old James Roberts of Natchez, MS, was walking in the right eastbound lane of US 190. A 2007 Dodge Charger driven by 21-year-old Donald Vaughns of Melville, LA, was traveling east in the right lane of US 190 approaching Roberts. For reasons still under investigation, the front of Vaughns’ vehicle struck Roberts. After impact Roberts came to rest in the roadway. Roberts was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Landry Parish Coroner. Vaughns was not injured in the crash. Two passengers in his vehicle sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene. Routine toxicology samples have been obtained and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Vaughns was cited for driving with a suspended license. This crash remains under investigation. Louisiana State Police reminds pedestrians that State Law requires pedestrians to walk on a sidewalk if one is provided. If no sidewalk is provided pedestrians must walk on the left shoulder, or as far to the left side of the road as practical, against the flow of traffic. Troopers also recommend that pedestrians wear light colored, or reflective clothing if walking on the road between dusk and dawn or during times of inclement weather. This is the 64th fatal crash and the 66th fatality Troop I has investigated this year. For More Information Contact: | |||
