Troop I - NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release February 4, 2012 Unrestrained Opelousas Man Dies in Single Vehicle Crash Evangeline Parish- Today, troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a single vehicle fatal crash on highway LA 104 east of LA 29 which claimed the life of an Opelousas man. According to investigating troopers, on February 4, 2012, at 3:30 p.m., 74-year-old Paul Johnson of Opelousas was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado east on highway LA 104. For reasons still under investigation, Johnson lost control of his vehicle in a left curve, drove off the right side of the road then subsequently struck a tree. Troopers indicated Johnson was unrestrained, and was ejected from the vehicle after it struck the tree. Johnson was pronounced dead by the Evangeline Parish Corner. It is unknown if driver impairment was a factor in this crash; however, routine toxicology samples were obtained and have been submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. This crash remains under investigation. While not all crashes are survivable, the proper wearing of a seat belt and the correct use of age and size appropriate child restraints are still the best ways to reduce injuries and deaths in traffic crashes.
