Troopers Investigate Fatal Crash on US Highway 90

Iberia Parish- This morning, troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a fatal crash on US Highway 90 at LA Highway 675 which claimed the life of a Jeanerette woman.

According to investigating troopers, on February 15, 2012, at 1:32 a.m., 52-year-old Michael Johnson of West Monroe, was driving a 2003 Ford truck east on US Highway 90 approaching LA Highway 675. Moneshia Iyeumame Eligwe, 24-years-old of Jeanerette, was sitting in the right lane of US Highway 90. For reasons still under investigation, Johnson’s vehicle struck Eligwe.

Eligwe was pronounced dead by the Iberia Parish Coroner. Johnson was not injured in the crash. Impairment is not suspected on the part of Johnson, but it is unknown if Eligwe was impaired. Routine toxicology samples were obtained from both drivers and have been submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

During their investigation, troopers discovered Eligwe had been involved in a prior two vehicle crash at the same location. After exiting her vehicle, Eligwe sat down in the right lane of US Highway 90. Both crashes remain under investigation.

Troopers recommend that occupants of a motor vehicle who have been involved in a crash remain in the vehicle and call 911. Should the occupants need to exit the vehicle, troopers recommend they locate a safe location away from the roadway to await the arrival of emergency responders.
