TROOP I - NEWS RELEASE

October 28, 2012

St. Mary Parish Fatal Crash

Early yesterday afternoon, a single vehicle crash killed a man from Franklin, LA.

Troopers responded to the crash around 1:05 p.m., which occurred on US Hwy 90 east of Franklin. The crash involved an 18 wheeler, fully loaded with sugar cane, driven by Roderick Preston (B/M 34 yrs). The vehicle was eastbound on US Hwy 90 when Preston lost control and exited the left side of the roadway and entered the median. After entering the median, the vehicle continued across the westbound lanes and the westbound frontage road before entering the Hansen Canal, where it came to rest with the cab totally submerged. At approximately 11:00 p.m. last night, the vehicle was recovered from the canal.

It is unknown if Preston was wearing his seatbelt. He was pronounced dead.

Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation.

While not all crashes are survivable, seatbelts can greatly decrease the occupant’s chance of death and will greatly reduce the extent of injury.
