Bicyclist Killed In Iberia Parish Crash Last night, a crash involving a bicycle killed a teenager from New Iberia, LA.
Troopers responded to the crash around 9:15 p.m., which occurred on LA Hwy 182 west of Jeanerette, LA. The crash involved a bicycle, driven by Jaquil Provost (B/M 17 yrs) and a 2011 Kia Sorento, driven by Harold Racca (W/M 73 yrs) of New Iberia. The bicycle was westbound on LA Hwy 182, approximately four feet from the white fog line, when the westbound Kia collided with it. The bicycle was not equipped with any form of lighting at the time of the crash.
Provost was transported to Iberia General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Racca was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured.
Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation.
Louisiana law requires that an operator of a bicycle, when in use at nighttime, shall be equipped with a lamp on the front which shall emit a white light visible from a distance of at least five hundred feet to the front and with a red reflector on the rear. A reflector is required on each side facing outward at a right angle to the bicycle frame and shall be visible from all distances within six hundred feet to one hundred feet to the rear when directly in front of lower beams of headlamps on a motor vehicle. A lamp emitting a red light visible from a distance of five hundred feet to the rear may be used in addition to the red reflector. Also, every person operating a bicycle upon a roadway shall ride as near to the right side of the roadway as practicable.
