Troopers Investigating Third Fatal Crash Since Saturday

ST. MARTIN PARISH- Last night, Troopers assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a two vehicle fatal crash on LA Highway 93 near Bayou Fuselier Road which claimed the life of an Opelousas man.

According to investigating Troopers on November 19, 2012, at 5:50 p.m., 68-year-old Paul Young of Opelousas was driving a 1999 Ford truck north on LA Highway 93. A 2000 Mazda passenger car, driven by 57-year-old Beatrice Rabalais of Lake Arthur, was traveling south on LA Highway 93 approaching Young’s vehicle. For reasons still under investigation, Young crossed the center line and struck Rabalais’ vehicle head-on.

Young, who was not wearing a seat belt, sustained fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead by the St. Martin Parish Coroner. Rabalais was wearing a seat belt and sustained moderate injuries. She was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Toxicology samples were obtained from both drivers and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

This in the third fatal crash Troop I has investigated since Saturday. Lack of restraint use was a common factor in two of the crashes. Troopers remind all occupants of motor vehicles that State Law requires each person in a motor vehicle be properly restrained. While wearing a seat belt may not save you in every crash, it will greatly reduce your risk of injury in most crashes.
