Troop I - NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release August 5, 2012 Berwick Elementary School Secretary Arrested for Felony Theft BERWICK- Today, Detectives with Louisiana State Police arrested a Berwick Elementary School Secretary for charges relating to felony theft and forgery. In July of this year, Detectives received a request from the 16th Judicial District Attorney’s office to conduct an investigation into a theft complaint at Berwick Elementary School. The investigation involved theft of St. Mary Parish School Board funds by Berwick Elementary School’s Secretary and Bookkeeper, 47-year-old Penny T. Crappell of Berwick. Through the course of investigation, Detectives were able to obtain evidence which indicated that Crappell, who also serves as an elected Councilwoman for the City of Berwick, used her position at the elementary school to steal funds from the St. Mary Parish School Board for personal gain. The evidence also indicated Crappell forged the name of an employee at the school to negotiate some of the false transactions. In all, Detectives discovered Crappell conducted 53 transactions for various dollar amounts totaling over $58,000.00. This morning at about 9:00 a.m., Crappell turned herself in to Detectives at the St. Mary Parish Jail. She was booked for felony theft and forgery. This case remains under investigation.
