Doesn’t Pay

July 28, 2008

In late 1999, Louisiana State Police Insurance Fraud unit along with the Cooperative Disability Investigations, Social Security Administration and the Office of Inspector General began investigating 58-year-old David Lee Hartford, of Patterson, Louisiana, for Insurance Fraud.

On July 24, 2008, Hartford was sentenced in the Western District of Louisiana Federal Court, in Lafayette, for his guilty plea of theft of government money, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 641.

The federal court judge sentenced Hartford to serve thirteen months in prison, followed by a three year supervised probation upon his release. Hartford was also ordered to pay the Social Security Administration $104,501.50 in restitution.

Hartford received an Social Security Administration disability check for disorders of the autonomic nervous system from January of 1997, through February of 2007. Investigation revealed that Hartford owned and operated GDI Systems, Inc., while he was drawing benefits. Hartford made numerous false statements to SSA in which he denied his employment. The total fraud loss was $104,501.50.

The Louisiana State Police will continue to work closely with other agencies to rid our state of Insurance Fraud.
