Troopers Use GPS
To Locate Victim

December 28, 2008
Louisiana State Police – Troop I troopers go beyond their normal duties to locate a possible crash victim in wooded area within St. Martin Parish.
At Approximately 2:00pm, on December 27, 2008, Troop I received information of a subject possibly involved in a crash at an unknown location within St Martin Parish. The driver reportedly called his mother in Assumption Parish and advised her that he had struck a utility pole with his vehicle and was injured. The subject was unsure of his location. Troopers contacted AT&T and triangulated the possible location of the driver, while using his cell phone. AT&T indicated the caller was within the Arnaudville area (coordinates 30.38051/91.85174). Troop I troopers, St Martin Sheriff’s Office, Acadian Ambulance and State Police Air Support responded to the area, checked numerous locations and were unable to locate the subject. The State Police Air support had to return to LSP Headquarters, due to approaching severe weather and nightfall.

Troopers obtained an affidavit thru the AT&T Information Center and obtained new coordinates indicating that the last call from the driver’s cell phone was made @ 12:51pm. The coordinates were given as 30.38054/91.85181. Troopers were given the new coordinates and responded to the area. Once in the area they began searching a wooded area on foot with a hand held GPS. Even though night fall had come, troopers knew that severe weather was approaching and the driver had to be located. After nearly a seven hour search, troopers located the subject at 8:35pm. The subject was located approximately 500 yards off of the main roadway in a wooded area in a creek bed. The subject was not injured. He was disoriented and complained of being cold. As of 9:30pm troopers had not been able to locate the driver vehicle. Acadian Ambulance responded to the scene and transported the subject to University Medical Center in Lafayette for evaluation. The subject’s mother was contacted and informed that her son was located and that he was not injured.

The subject was identified as twenty-nine year old Charles Lodrigue of Morgan City, LA
