St. Mary Parish Crash

Kills One Person


October 5, 2008

Louisiana State Police – Troop I is currently investigating a two vehicle fatal crash on La 318 at La 668, within St. Mary Parish.

Thirty-five year old Wilfrid Lanie of Jeanerette, La, was operating a farm tractor, towing cane equipment, north on La 318 approaching La 668. Thirty-nine year old Troy Ward of Jeanerette, La, was operating his motorcycle north on La 318 approaching the farm tractor from the rear. Ward drove left of the solid yellow, no passing line and entered the opposing southbound lane of La 318, in an attempt to pass the tractor. Lanie, attempted to make a left turn from La 318 onto La 668. The motorcycle struck the front, left tire of tractor in the southbound lane of La 318 in the intersection. Ward was pronounced dead at the scene. Alcohol and drugs are not suspected to be a contributing factor in the crash. Lanie did not sustain injuries as a result of the crash.

This was the 48th Fatal Crash and the 53rd Fatality Troop I has investigated thus far in 2008.
