Pedestrian Struck and Killed on Interstate 10 in West Baton Rouge Parish

UPDATE: The pedestrian killed in Monday night’s crash has been identified as Walter Ellison, Jr. (B/M, age 39) of Rex, GA. Further information provided by investigators indicated that Ellison was the passenger in an 18-wheeler that was involved in a traffic stop initiated by West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Deputies. During the traffic stop, Ellison was detained and placed in handcuffs. While handcuffed, Ellison ran from the westbound shoulder into the oncoming path of the pickup. Ellison was in the left westbound lane when he was struck by the pickup.

West Baton Rouge – Louisiana State Police Troop A investigated a fatal crash in which a pedestrian was struck on Interstate 10 westbound west of LA 415 shortly after midnight. Investigation revealed that the pedestrian, a 39-year-old black male, stepped into the path of an on-coming 1999 Chevrolet pickup, being driven by Juana Zamora (H/F, age 47) of Bonita Springs, FL. The pickup struck and killed the pedestrian, whose name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The West Baton Rouge Coroner’s Office pronounced the pedestrian deceased at the scene.

Troopers do not suspect alcohol to have been a factor in the crash on the part of Zamora. She voluntarily submitted a breath sample to the Intoxilyzer 5000, which showed no detectable alcohol in her system. Troopers have submitted a sample of the deceased pedestrian’s blood to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis.
