Troopers Continue to Make
Impact on Impaired Driver

March 8, 2008
The weather may have put a stop to the Impaired Driver checkpoint last night in Vermilion Parish, but it did not stop troopers from finding impaired drivers. Troop I – State Troopers went out in force and were able to take twenty two impaired drivers off of the Acadiana roadways.

Unfortunately, troopers were not able to find one driver in lower St. Martin before he crashed and was ejected from his vehicle. The crash occurred at around 4:15 am this morning on LA 997 near Belle River Public landing. Forty seven year old Kenneth Benoit of Plaquemine, La was traveling south on LA 997 exiting a left curve when he traveled off the road to the right. From the right shoulder, Benoit steered left in an attempt to re-enter the southbound lane but overcorrected. Benoit’s vehicle rotated counterclockwise as it crossed the roadway to the left and entered the east ditch. Benoit’s vehicle struck several small trees with its rear end at which time Benoit was ejected. Benoit’s vehicle continued traveling south after impacting the trees and came to rest in the east ditch, facing south. Benoit was transported by Air Med from Teche Regional to University with critical injuries. Benoit was not restrained in the crash and alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor in this crash
