Troop A Urges Preparedness and Safety for Hurricane Season

Baton RougeWith the 2010 Hurricane Season upon us, Louisiana State Police Troop A urges citizens to be prepared, plan ahead, and have a game plan in place before the arrival of a potentially dangerous storm.

Understand the difference between a hurricane watch and a hurricane warning:
- Hurricane Watch: conditions are possible in the specified area of the watch, usually within 36 hours.
- Hurricane Warning: conditions are expected in the specified area of the warning, usually within 24 hours.

If Parish or State Officials tell you to evacuate:
- Leave as soon as possible. Contraflow is the evacuation of last resort!!! If advised to evacuate, do so immediately!
- Make a Family Communications Plan. Tell someone outside the storm area where you are going.
- Take emergency supplies, warm protective clothing, and blankets/sleeping bags to shelter.
- Protect your home by unplugging appliances and turning off electricity and water.

Even if you are not ordered to evacuate, be familiar with the evacuation routes. People living in the Greater Baton Rouge Area will be affected by an evacuation ordered anywhere in south Louisiana. When parishes in South Louisiana are forced to evacuate, millions of people come to, and pass through, the Baton Rouge area. Ensure that you have your emergency supplies in place well ahead of time. During the onset of the storm is too late to go out to get last minute items. You will also want to avoid being on the roadways as millions of vehicles pass through the area.

Get a game plan now to ensure a safe Hurricane Season. For more information on Hurricane Preparedness, you can access the web at www.lsp.org or www.getagameplan.org. You can download contraflow maps, preparedness guides, and important numbers in case of specific needs during a disaster. These websites have a wealth of information and Troopers strongly encourage everyone to review the sites and develop a plan now. Captain Frank Ducote, Troop A Commander, said, “Time is the one thing you have now that will no longer be available once a Hurricane is upon us. Proper planning and preparation now will make this Hurricane Season safer and easier to handle for everyone.”
