| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent News Release – Troop I April 6, 2010 Jennings Man Dies in Acadia Parish Crash IOTA – Today, Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a two vehicle crash that claimed the life of a Jennings man. According to investigating troopers, on April 6, 2010, at 1:42 p.m., a 1987 Ford truck driven by 49 year old Sidney Bergeaux of Basile was traveling west on a private driveway near LA 91 in Acadia Parish. Bergeaux failed to yield to a 2006 International 18-wheeler driven by 29 year old Coy Benoit of Jennings that was heading south on LA 91 north of LA 368. Bergeaux’s vehicle was struck on the passenger side door. After impact, both vehicles ran off the road and the 18-wheeler overturned. Benoit, the driver of the 18-wheeler, was fatally injured and pronounced dead at the scene by the Acadia Parish Coroner’s Office. Bergeaux received minor injuries. The 18-wheeler was carrying crude oil that spilled as a result of the crash. The crash occurred in a rural area and no evacuations were needed. Troopers with the Louisiana State Police Hazardous Materials Section responded and have closed the roadway for ½ mile north and south of the crash scene for clean-up. The roadway will be reopened as soon as it is safe to do so. Toxicology samples were taken from both drivers and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. The crash remains under investigation and charges are pending. This is the 18th fatal crash and the 20th fatality Troop I has investigated this year.
