Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP A- NEWS RELEASE Reckless Driving Leads to Fatal Crash ***UPDATE**** State troopers have identified the deceased passenger of the 2000 Chevrolet Cavaliar as 17-year old Ramie R. Martinez (W/F) from Greenwell Springs. Additional offenses of Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor, No Driver’s License and No Seat Belt were added to Cherish McConn’s criminal charges. DENHAM SPRINGS- At approximately 8:42 pm on March 18, 2010, Louisiana State Police Troop A investigated a two-vehicle crash that resulted in the death of 17-year old female. The crash occurred on LA Hwy 1026 (Lockhart Rd) east of LA Hwy 1030 (Cockerham Rd). A 2000 Chevrolet Cavaliar, driven by Cherish D. McConn (W/F, 26 years old) of Denham Springs, was traveling eastbound on LA Hwy 1026 (Lockhart Rd). Witnesses to the crash said they observed the vehicle swerving erratically prior to it crossing the centerline and colliding with a west bound 1994 GMC Truck. The driver of the GMC truck, Ronald A. Cupit (W/M, 53 years old) of Denham Springs, swerved left to avoid the collision, but his truck struck the Cavaliar in its passenger side front door. A 17-year old female passenger seated in the front of the Chevrolet Cavaliar was killed upon impact after being partially ejected from the vehicle. A second 17-year old female passenger in the rear of the vehicle received minor injuries and was transported to Ochsner Hospital. The two occupants of the GMC truck, Cupit and his 5-year old son, both received minor injuries in the crash. They were both wearing a seat belt. None of the occupants in the Chevy Cavaliar were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. McConn was transported to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital with moderate injuries. Upon her release, she will be charged with Reckless Operation, Driving While Impaired, Vehicular Negligent Injuring, and Vehicular Homicide. She will be booked into the Livingston Parish Detention Center. Impairment is believed to be a factor in this crash. Blood was drawn from McConn and will be submitted to the State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis. Cupit submitted to a chemical breath test, which resulted in no detectable alcohol in his blood.
