Edmonson, Superintendent Troop I Press Release July 5, 2010 UPDATE Results of No Refusal Weekend in Troop I During the July 4th weekend, Louisiana State Police Troop I held a “No Refusal Weekend.” This campaign took place in St. Mary Parish. Troopers working patrol in St. Mary located and arrested two people for DWI. Throughout the rest of the troop area troopers arrested a total of twenty-four people for DWI. Troopers working in Troop I did not investigate any critical or fatal crashes. State Police will continue working diligently to locate and remove impaired drivers from the roadways of Acadiana. July 1, 2010 No Refusal Weekend in Troop I This 4th of July weekend, Louisiana State Police Troop I will have a “No Refusal Weekend” for persons suspected of driving while intoxicated. The campaign will take place in one of the eight Troop I parishes. Troop I encompasses St. Landry, St. Martin, St. Mary, Lafayette, Evangeline, Acadia, Vermilion and Iberia. If a person is stopped and suspected of being impaired on either alcohol or narcotics that person will be placed under arrest as normal and taken to the proper breath testing location. Once at the testing site, the suspect will be allowed to submit a proper breath sample to determine the amount of alcohol in his or her blood. If the suspect refuses to take the test, the trooper will obtain a search warrant from a judge which will compel the suspect to submit to the breath test. If the suspect still refuses to submit to the test the trooper will be allowed to have blood drawn from the suspect for toxicology tests. This process will also apply to those persons suspected of being under the influence of narcotics. Anyone suspected of being under the influence of narcotics will be asked to submit a urine sample for toxicology tests. If the suspect refuses, the trooper may obtain a search warrant from the judge. Capitan Troy Meche, commander of Troop I says, “This is an effort by our troop to reduce the number of alcohol related crashes during a time when impaired driving is known to be high. We want to encourage anyone who has consumed alcohol, no matter how much, to designate a driver.” This is the first time Troop I is participating in this campaign.
