Hit and Run Crash Leaves Abbeville Man Dead

Carencro- Today, Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a hit and run crash on I-49 milepost 5 that left an Abbeville man dead.

According to investigating troopers, on August 14, 2010, at 1:46 p.m., a 1996 Ford truck was stopped on the outside shoulder of I-49 northbound milepost 5 due to mechanical problems. The three occupants of the vehicle, 48-year-old Clarence Matthews of Abbeville, LA, and the other two occupants were standing outside of the vehicle. A gray unknown make and model vehicle was traveling north on I-49 in the outside lane. A 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier, driven by 47-year-old Arsenio Orteza of Opelousas, LA, was traveling north on I-49 in the inside lane. The gray vehicle crossed the center line and struck the Cavalier. After being hit the Cavalier ran off the left side of the road, then began to rotate as it traveled back across the northbound lanes. The Cavalier continued to travel striking Matthews, the other two pedestrians, and the Ford on the shoulder.

Matthews was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead as a result of his injuries. The other two pedestrians were also transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. Orteza was not injured in the crash.

Witnesses at the scene describe the vehicle that fled as a gray or blue older model vehicle possibly a late 1970’s or 1980’s model. The vehicle should have moderate damage on the driver’s side. Anyone with any information is asked to call Louisiana State Police Troop I at 337-262-5880.
