Edmonson, Superintendent St. Landry Parish Crash Claims The Life Of An Opelousas Man March 25, 2009 Louisiana State Police –Troop I is investigating a two vehicle fatal crash, which claimed the life of an Opelousas resident and injured another. The crash occurred around 7:00 am this morning, on US 167 in the community of Plaisance. Seventy year old Thirkfield Smith of Opelousas, La, was operating a 2001 Toyota truck northbound on US 167, when for unknown reasons, Smith crossed the centerline and struck a 2004 GMC van head-on, which was driven by forty-three year old Terry Frank of Opelousas, La. Smith, was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene and Frank was transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries. Troopers do not suspect alcohol/drugs to be factor in the crash. Troop I has investigated thirteen fatal crashes, which has resulted in seventeen fatalities thus far I 2009. “Alcohol or Drugs, Impairment is Impairment!
