St. Mary Parish- Yesterday shortly before 8:00 pm, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop I responded to a fatal pedestrian crash on LA 87 near Sugarmill in St. Mary Parish.

Killed in the crash was twenty one year old Luther Lanham. Lanham was walking against the flow of traffic at the time of the crash. Lanham was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Mary Parish Coroner at the scene.

According to the investigating troopers from Troop I, on November 25 at around 9:08 pm, Lanham was walking east in the westbound lanes of travel on LA 87. Forty five year old Carl Hebert was driving a silver 1995 Mercury Cougar, east on LA 87. Hebert was approaching a right curve when, he crossed into the westbound lane and drove onto the shoulder. Hebert steered to the right in an attempt to re-enter the roadway. While steering to the right, Hebert’s vehicle struck the pedestrian from behind in the westbound lane of travel. At the time of the crash Lanham was near the north edge of the roadway. Hebert was cited for driving left of center.

Toxicology samples for Hebert were obtained, and the results are pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. This crash remains under investigation.
