Troopers Arrest Carencro Man in Connection with Hit and Run Fatality

Lafayette- Yesterday, troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop I arrested a Carencro man in connection with the hit and run death of Benjamin Lewis.

On September 23, 2009, troopers responded to a fatal hit and run crash that involved a pedestrian on LA 339 at Fortune Rd. The investigating troopers found Lewis’ body lying on the side of the road, and determined that he was struck by a vehicle which fled the scene. Troopers recovered evidence from the scene which led them to believe that the vehicle they were looking for was a 2007 Nissan Frontier with a missing passenger side mirror, and damage to the front passenger side.

On October 13, 2009, one of the investigating troopers, during routine patrol, located a vehicle matching that description in the Youngsville area. Troopers learned that the vehicle belonged to forty five year old Shannon Miller (122 Grassy Lane, Carencro, LA).

On October 15, 2009, troopers obtained a search warrant for Miller’s vehicle. During their search of the exterior of vehicle, troopers seized evidence they believed matched evidence recovered from the scene. Troopers also discovered that Miller had removed vehicle parts that may have aided them with their investigation. Troopers submitted the evidence they obtained to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab, and the Acadiana Crime Lab for analysis. The results of the analysis showed that evidence recovered from the scene matched the evidence taken from Miller’s vehicle. In addition, troopers subpoenaed Miller’s cell phone records, and were able to place him in the area at the time the crash occurred.

On December 8, 2009, troopers obtained an arrest warrant for Miller. Troopers arrested Miller at his residence shortly before 3:00 pm without incident. Troopers booked Miller into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center for one count of Drivers to Exercise Due Care, one count of felony Hit and Run, one count Obstruction of Justice, and one count Negligent Homicide. This case remains under investigation.
