Edmonson, Superintendent Troop I- Press Release December 15, 2009 Lafayette Man Arrested for VIN Switching Lafayette- Today troopers with Louisiana State Police Insurance Fraud Unit arrested a Lafayette man for switching a vehicle identification number plate on a car, and theft by fraud. In November, troopers began an investigation into allegations that fifty five year old Marvin Ziegler of Lafayette, LA, was selling vehicles with switched VIN plates. Ziegler is the manager of the Lafayette Towing Company in Lafayette. Troopers located a 2003 Chrysler Concorde, displaying a changed VIN plate, which Ziegler had sold to an individual. Troopers discovered the VIN plate on the Concorde had been taken off of a vehicle that had been crashed at one time, and totaled by an insurance company. By switching the vehicle identification numbers, Ziegler was able to sell the Chrysler for more then fair market value. Based on the findings of the investigation, troopers obtained a search warrant for Lafayette Towing and an arrest warrant for Ziegler. Today troopers executed a search warrant at Lafayette Towing Company, and took Ziegler into custody without incident. Troopers booked Ziegler into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on charges of Alteration of Identifying Numbers, and felony Theft by Fraud. Ziegler’s bond is $100,000. Troopers believe Ziegler may have sold other vehicles with switched VIN plates. If you purchased a vehicle from Ziegler, or suspect that your VIN plate has been tampered with or changed, you are asked to contact State Police Detectives at 337-262-3341.
