Denham Springs Man Killed in Crash, Alcohol Suspected Factor

Denham Springs – Louisiana State Police Troop A is currently investigating a fatal crash that occurred on LA 16 east of LA 1026 (Juban Road) this morning shortly before 3:00 am. Preliminary investigation revealed that Jason Lyons (W/M, age 35) of Denham Springs was driving a 2001 Ford Explorer south on LA 16 when he entered a left curve. The vehicle ran off the roadway to the right, struck a sign and a guardrail, became airborne, and began to flip. It came to rest on its roof along the wood-line on the southbound edge of LA 16. Lyons was pronounced deceased on the scene by the Livingston Parish Coroner’s Office. Lyons was the sole occupant in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Alcohol is suspected to have been a factor in the crash and Troopers have submitted a sample of Lyons’ blood to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis.

State Troopers will continue to aggressively enforce Louisiana’s DWI laws in an effort to end tragic crashes caused by impaired drivers. Across the state, impaired drivers accounted for nearly half of the fatal crashes last year. According to the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, 405 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes last year. Louisiana State Police has partnered with local and state agencies to reach out to the public and change the culture of acceptance of drinking and driving in Louisiana. While instances of impaired driving are down, there is still a long way to go. Other partners, such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), have been instrumental in relaying the message that there are far too many positive alternatives to impaired driving. Through enforcement and education, Louisiana State Police and its partners intend to bring alcohol related crashes to an end.
