TROOP I NEWS RELEASE

November 26, 2013
Mississippi Man Dies in Single Vehicle Crash

St. Martin Parish- Last night, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a single vehicle crash on LA Highway 31 near Joseph Road which claimed the life of a Mississippi man.

According to investigating Troopers at 10:15 p.m. last night, 51-year-old Eric Toy of Hattiesburg, MS was driving a 2008 GMC Acadia north LA Highway 31. For reasons still under investigation, Toy traveled off the left side of the road, struck the ditch embankment, hit a utility pole which caused his vehicle to overturn. Toy was restrained when the crash occurred; however, he was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Martin Parish Coroner.

It is unknown if impairment was a factor in this crash. Troopers obtained routine toxicology samples which will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Last year, 62% of the fatal crashes investigated by Troop I involved some form of impairment. While results are still pending in this crash, Troopers remind drivers about the dangers of impaired driving. Even after having just one drink, decision making abilities are hindered. Make the responsible decision every time, don’t drink and drive.
