Motorcyclist Dies in Acadia Parish Crash

Mire Shortly after 11:00 pm on September 21, 2019, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a two vehicle fatal crash that occurred on LA Hwy 98 East of LA Hwy 95 in Acadia Parish. The crash took the life of 38-year-old Michael Daigle of Church Point.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Daigle was riding a 2013 Honda motorcycle westbound on LA 98. At the same time, 25-year-old Holden Foti was driving a 2001 Ram pickup eastbound on LA 98. Foti failed to yield as he was turning left onto a private driveway and was struck by the oncoming Honda as he entered the westbound lane.

Despite the fact that he was wearing a DOT approved safety helmet, Daigle received fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was later pronounced deceased at a local hospital. Foti was properly restrained and was uninjured. Impairment is unknown on the part of Daigle but a routine toxicology sample was taken for analysis. Foti did provide a breath sample which indicated a BAC of 0.158g%.

Foti was booked into the Acadia Parish Jail on the charges of LRS 14:98.1 Operating While Intoxicated 1st Offense, LRS 32:122 Vehicle Turning Left at Intersection, and LRS 14:39 Negligent Injuring. Foti’s Negligent Injuring charge will be upgraded to LRS 14:32.1 Vehicular Homicide following Daigle’s death. This crash remains under investigation and there is no more information available at this time.

Time and time again, Troopers witness preventable motor vehicle crashes. Impairment and lack of seat belt usage are primary causes of crashes across the state of Louisiana. Nearly half of the fatal crashes in Louisiana are caused by impaired drivers. Louisiana State Police urge motorists to have a plan in place that includes a designated driver. Please choose to not drive impaired or ride with an impaired driver, and always buckle up.
