Driver Succumbs to Injuries in St. Landry Parish Crash

Church Point – At approximately 6:00 pm on July 30, 2019, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a two-vehicle crash on LA 343 at LA 761 in St. Landry Parish. The crash ultimately took the life of 21-year-old Colby Deemer of Carencro.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed Deemer was driving a 2016 Toyota Camry when he failed to yield at a stop sign to oncoming traffic as he entered LA 343 from LA 761. Deemer’s vehicle was struck in the northbound travel lane by a 2014 Ram pickup truck driven by Jason Esta.

Deemer was restrained at the time of the crash and was transported to Lafayette General Hospital in critical condition. On August 13th, State Police was notified that Deemer succumbed to injuries on August 3rd. Esta was properly restrained and suffered moderate injuries. Impairment is unknown but standard toxicology samples were obtained from both drivers. This crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that all occupants in a vehicle must be restrained, regardless of seating position. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired and always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained can often mean the difference between life and death.
