| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP A - NEWS RELEASE May 8, 2010 Unrestrained Driver Ejected and Killed in St. James Parish Crash Convent, LA – Louisiana State Police Troop A investigated a single vehicle fatal crash that occurred on LA 3214 at LA 44 this morning shortly before 5:00 am. Investigation revealed Lyle C. Benn (B/M, age 50) of Convent was driving a 1998 Ford Explorer west on LA 3214 approaching LA 44. Benn failed to stop at the “T” intersection, crossed the levee and rolled several times before coming to rest. Benn was unrestrained when the crash occurred and was ejected from the vehicle. He died as a result of his injuries. Benn’s passenger, Nathan McKinley (B/M, age 57) of Convent, was properly restrained when the crash occurred and survived the crash. Acadian Ambulance transported McKinley to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital with minor to moderate injuries. State Troopers will continue to aggressively enforce the primary seat belt law in an effort to reduce the number of serious injuries and fatalities caused by ejections throughout the state. Louisiana law requires that everyone in a motor vehicle, regardless of seating position, be properly restrained at all times. During a rollover crash, statistics show that the safest place to be is INSIDE of the vehicle. Troopers continue to work with local agencies through education and enforcement to increase awareness and adherence to the law. BUCKLE UP!!! SEAT BELTS SAVE LIVES!!!
