TROOP I NEWS RELEASE Woman Succumbs to Injuries Sustained Single Vehicle Crash St. Martin Parish – At approximately 2:15 a.m. on December 12, 2019, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a single-vehicle crash on LA Hwy 3039 near Caliste Olivier Road in St. Martin Parish. The crash ultimately took the life of 60-year-old Arlene Higginbotham of St. Martinville. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Higginbotham was driving a 2006 Mazda 6 northbound on LA Hwy 3039. For unknown reasons, her vehicle ran off the roadway and overturned before coming to rest in the ditch. Higginbotham was unrestrained at the time of the crash and was ejected. She was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. On December 24th, State Police was notified that Higginbotham succumbed to her injuries on December 19th. Impairment is unknown and this crash remains under investigation. Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that all occupants in a vehicle must be restrained, regardless of seating position. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Troop I has investigated 58 fatal crashes resulting in 60 deaths. Contact Information: | |||
