TROOP I NEWS RELEASE Port Allen Man Charged with Vehicular Homicide Following Crash in St. Landry Parish St. Landry Parish – Shortly before 9:00 pm on October 5, 2018, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I responded a two vehicle crash that resulted in a fatality on U.S. Hwy 71 near Chance Road in St. Landry Parish. The crash took the life of 49-year-old Tony Smith of Plaucheville. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that a 2006 Ford F150, driven by Jarred Brown, 30, of Port Allen, was southbound on US Hwy 71 when it traveled into the northbound lane of Smith’s 2006 Ford van. After the first crash, a third vehicle struck Brown’s vehicle. The second collision is being investigated as a separate crash. Smith, although properly restrained, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene by the St. Landry Parish Coroner’s Office. Brown suffered moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Troopers on the scene suspected impairment on the part of Brown. Troopers followed up the investigation at the hospital where Brown was arrested on the following charges: driving left of center, no seatbelt, and vehicular homicide. Standardized toxicology tests are pending for both drivers. Brown will be booked into jail upon release from the hospital. The crash remains under investigation. Impaired driving continues to be a major problem throughout Louisiana. Whether impaired through alcohol, drugs, or a combination of the two, the consequences of driving while impaired remain the same as is evident in this preventable crash. Contact Information: | |||
