Unrestrained Driver Killed in Evangeline Parish Crash

Evangeline Parish – Yesterday evening, shortly after 10:30 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a two vehicle fatal crash on LA 104 at Beacon Road. The crash claimed the life of 18-year-old McKenzie Dupre of Washington, LA.

The initial investigation indicated that Dupre was operating a 2003 Toyota Camry northbound on Beacon Rd. at the intersection of LA 104. At the same time 69-year-old James Fontenot of Mamou was operating a 2002 Ford F-150 eastbound on LA 104. Dupre proceeded through the intersection, and her Camry was struck by the F-150.

Dupre was not wearing a seat belt and sustained critical injuries. She was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced deceased. Fontenot was wearing a seat belt and sustained minor injuries. He was transported to a local hospital and treated for his injuries.

Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash; however, toxicology samples were taken from taken from Dupre and Fontenot and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that all occupants of a motor vehicle must be restrained, regardless of seating position. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.
