Pedestrian Killed in Crash on LA 347

St. Martin Parish – Yesterday evening, shortly after 8:30 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a fatal crash involving a pedestrian on LA 347 near Doyle Melancon Road. The pedestrian was identified as 63-year-old Steven Brasseaux of Breaux Bridge.

The initial investigation indicated that Brasseaux was attempting to walk across the northbound lane of LA 347 and was struck by a 2001 Toyota Tacoma, driven by 21-year-old Dilian Patin of Breaux Bridge, which was traveling north on LA 347. Brasseaux sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on scene by the St. Martin Parish Coroner’s Office. Patin was wearing a seat belt and was not injured. Patin voluntarily submitted to a chemical test and the results indicated he was not impaired. A toxicology sample was taken from Brasseaux and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.

Pedestrians and motorists alike are urged to remain vigilant while on area roadways and pay close attention to their surroundings. Crashes involving pedestrians can often be avoided by following some basic safety guidelines. Pedestrians should wear light-colored or reflective clothing and should always avoid walking on the roadway in dark areas. Pedestrians must also assume that approaching motorists cannot see them, especially at night. Crossing roadways only in well-lit, designated areas and always walking facing traffic will enhance safety for pedestrians.
