TROOP I NEWS RELEASE Improperly Restrained Driver Killed in Iberia Parish Crash Iberia Parish – At approximately 3:15 pm on May 9, 2019, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a two vehicle fatal crash on LA Hwy 675 near US 90 in Iberia Parish. The crash took the life of 84-year-old Reving Broussard, Jr. of New Iberia. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as 30-year-old Raymond K. Paul of New Iberia was driving south on LA Hwy 675 in a 2006 Ford Explorer. At the same time, Broussard was heading west on the west frontage road of US 90 driving a 2009 Ford Escape. For reasons unknown, Broussard failed to yield at the intersection and his Escape was struck by the Explorer. Paul was wearing his seat belt and was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. Broussard was not properly restrained and suffered fatal injuries. Broussard was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Iberia Parish Coroner. Impairment is not suspected for either driver, but toxicology samples were obtained from both to be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. This crash remains under investigation. Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that all occupants in a vehicle must be restrained, regardless of seating position. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired and always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained can often mean the difference between life and death.
